How to Convert Military Time to AM/PM

There are two main methods of displaying the time. The first one is the 12-hour clock which uses AM and PM, and the other is the 24-hour clock.

In 12-hour clock notation the day is split into two 12-hour periods running from midnight (12:00 AM) to noon (12:00 PM), and noon to midnight.

In military time the day runs from midnight to midnight and is divided into 24 hours from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59.

Conversion Rules

From 0:00 to 0:59 (midnight hour), add 12 and mark as AM:

• 0:00 = 12:00 AM (midnight)
• 0:15 = 12:15 AM
• 0:30 = 12:30 AM

From 1:00 to 11:59, just add AM:

• 9:00 = 9:00 AM
• 10:30 = 10:30 AM
• 11:45 = 11:45 AM

12:00 to 12:59, just add PM:

• 12:00 = 12:00 PM (noon)
• 12:30 = 12:30 PM

From 13:00 to 23:59, subtract 12 and mark as PM:

• 13:00 = 1:00 PM
• 17:30 = 5:30 PM
• 23:59 = 11:59 PM

Reading Military Time

In military time, hours are always "hundred", never "thousand". For example: 1000 is "ten hundred", 2000 is "twenty hundred". Whole hours are read "hundred hours" (e.g. 0800 = "zero eight hundred hours"). For times with minutes, the word "hundred" is omitted (e.g. 0905 = "zero nine zero five").
